Air Fresheners are products that are used to remove or eliminate unpleasant Odour in enclosed spaces. Air Fresheners are available in the form of candles, aerosol sprays, diffusers, potpourri, gels and mechanical or heat release products.

They operate using various methods or processes such as:

Certain adsorbents such as zeolite, charcoal or silica gel are used to mitigate chemical Odour.

There are some air fresheners which make use of anesthetics to dull the sense of smell.

Certain substances like rubber or TEG are used to neutralize Odour.

Odour caused as a result of bacterial activity could be removed by using disinfectants like ozone, TEG, or bleaching agents that contain hydrogen peroxide, chlorine or hypochlorites.

Air Fresheners can also mask or obscure offending Odour with fragrance.

Some of the important ingredients used in Air Fresheners include formaldehyde, aerosol propellant, petroleum distillates, and p-dichlorobenzene. They may also include terpenes, alcohols, Aldehydes, ketones, esters, phosphates, chlorine bleach, ammonia and various other synthetic fragrances. It has been found that most of the ingredients used in Air Fresheners release allergic substances and harmful air pollutants.

However, today there are various alternatives available in the market which is safe and healthy. Using such options can help you save money and significantly minimize the health risks associated with using chemical fragrance sprays.

Here are a few tips which you can use in your day-to-day life:

Today, most of the shops offer a wide variety of beeswax and soy candles that contain natural fragrances. Select an apt place in your home, light the candles and fill your house with natural, sweet fragrance!

Use essential oils or natural oils extracted from fragrant plants and spices to give your room a pleasant rejuvenating fragrance. 

One of the most commonly used alternative air freshening method for indoor use is to boil spices. Mix some smelling spices to boiling water and slowly take in the enriching, spicy aroma.

Use a small amount of finely grated citrus scent obtained from lemon or orange and place the scents on a small plate. Fill your room with juicy, refreshing fragrance!
